DIFFICULTY
INTERMEDIATE

Materials

  • Any yarn in golden brown, ivory, black, soft pink, white, red, green and dark green colour
  • Crochet hook that matches the size of your yarn
  • A pair of safety eyes and washer (I use oval eyes in 10x8mm)
  • (Optional) A safety nose (I use 10mm, but nose pattern is provided)
  • Tapestry/yarn needle
  • Stitch marker
  • Scissors
  • Stuffing
  • A hot glue gun

SIZE
I used Bali cotton yarn in size #2 (sport) and a 2.50mm crochet hook. My Present Shiba turned out approximately 12cm (3.4″) tall.

ABBREVIATIONS
R = round/row
ch = chain
st(s) = stitch(es)
sc = single crochet
hdc = half double crochet
dc = double crochet
tc = triple crochet
inc = increase (2sc in 1 st)
dec = decrease (sc in 2 st)
BLO = back loop only
FLO = front loop only
sk = skip
slst = slip stitch
x(…) = repeat (…) times

Sealing method
I often use this method to get rid of some tails because it saves more time than weaving the tails in one by one. However, make sure the area that you want to “seal” is not visible, thus, not making it ugly.

  1. Hold the tail to your piece. If you have more than 1 tail, you can twist it to become one.
  1. Apply a small amount of hot glue gun, quickly and carefully press it using a metal flat object, I’m using my scissors.

Cut off the tail and you’re done.

Snout
(ivory, soft pink)

R1: ch 6, (starting from 2nd ch from hook) 5sc. Turn to the other side of the chains then 5sc again.
Now you’re working in rounds. [10]
R2: (inc, sc) x5 [15]
R3: (inc, 2sc) x5 [20]
R4: sc around [20]
Slst, fasten off and leave a tail for sewing.
Now we’re going to make details on the snout:
1) Embroider a vertical line in the centre of the snout, slightly upper.
2) Using soft pink yarn, make the tongue:
Ch 3, (starting from 2nd ch from hook) 2hdc [2]. Fasten off and leave a tail for sewing.
3) Sew the tongue to the snout below the vertical line.

Arms (make 2)

R1: 5sc in magic ring [5]
R2: inc x5 [10]

Nose (optional)
(black)

I’m using a safety nose and cut the spike on the back of it using cutting pliers. Then, I will glue it to the snout later. If you don’t have safety nose (or can’t find one), you can just crochet it:
Ch 4, (starting from 2nd ch from hook) sc, hdc, sc [3]
Fasten off and leave a tail for sewing, or not leaving a tail and just glue them later.

Half polkadots (make 2)
(white)

Present’s body
(green, dark green, red)

Work in rows. Ch 1 and turn after each rows.
We’re making the outer part of the present’s body first.
R1: (in green) ch 18, (starting from 2nd ch from hook) 17sc [17]
R2-R17: sc in all sts (16 rows) [17]
Sc around the piece in this direction. Inc on the corners. Make sure you have a total of 68sts. From here, you’ll work in rounds (this is R1)

R2: (BLO) sc around [68]
R3-R12: sc around (10 rounds) [68]
Add 2sc so your last st will end up in the corner.
Don’t cut off the yarn. Put this piece aside.
Continue to make the inner part of the present’s body:
R1: (in dark green) ch 16, (starting from 2nd ch from hook) 15sc [15]
R2-R15: sc in all sts (14 rows) [15]
Sc around the piece in this direction. Inc on the corners. Make sure you have a total of 60sts. From here, you’ll work in rounds (this is R1)

R2: (FLO) sc around [60]
R3-R4: sc around (2 rounds) [60]
Add 1sc so your last st will end up in the corner.
Fasten off weave the tail in.

Now we’re going to merge both outer and inner pieces of the body:
1) Place the inner piece inside of the outer piece.
2) Using the hook that is still on the outer piece, crochet through both pieces: (inc inner only, 13sc, inc inner only) x4 [68] inc inner only = inc only on the inner piece. For the outer piece, sc only. So, you insert your hook in the NEXT st for the outer piece. Then, at the same time you insert your hook in the SAME st for the inner piece (2sc in 1 st).
3) Before fully close the gap, insert stuffing. Don’t insert too much stuffing so the shape will still be square. Weave in the tail.

Now we’re going to make the body ribbon.
1) Longer body ribbon: Ch 46 (starting from 4th ch from hook) 42tc, dc [43]. Weave in/seal off the tails.
2) Shorter body ribbon: Ch 44 (starting from 4th ch from hook) 40tc, dc [41]. Weave in/seal off the tails.
3) Sew/glue the shorter ribbon first. Place it on one side of the body, to the bottom, then to the other side.
4) Sew/glue the longer ribbon above the shorter ribbon. Place it on the opposite side of the shorter ribbon.
Since we crochet using different sizes of yarn and hook, you can freely make the ribbons longer/shorter, adapting to the size of your present’s body.

Present’s lid
(green, dark green, red)

Work in rows. Ch 1 and turn after each rows.
We’re making the outer part of the present’s lid first.
R1: (in green) ch 19, (starting from 2nd ch from hook) 18sc [18]
R2-R18: sc in all sts (17 rows) [18]
Sc around the whole piece like the previous present’s body. Inc on the corners. Make sure you have a total of 72sts. From here, you’ll work in rounds (this is R1).
R2: (BLO) sc around [72]
R3-R4: sc around (2 rounds) [72]
Add 1sc so your last st will end up in the corner.
Don’t cut off the yarn. Put this piece aside.
Continue to make the inner part of the present’s lid:
R1: (in dark green) ch 17, (starting from 2nd ch from hook) 16sc [16]
R2-R16: sc in all sts (15 rows) [16]
Sc around the whole piece like the previous present’s body. Inc on the corners. Make sure you have a total of 64sts. From here, you’ll work in rounds (this is R1).
R2: (FLO) sc around [64]
Add 1sc so your last st will end up in the corner.
Fasten off weave the tail in.
Now we’re going to merge both outer and inner pieces of the lid:
1) Place the inner piece inside of the outer piece.
2) Using the hook that is still on the outer piece, crochet through both pieces: (inc inner only, 14sc, inc inner only) x4 [72]
3) Weave in the tail.

Now we’re going to make the lid ribbon.
1) Longer lid ribbon: Ch 31 (starting from 4th ch from hook) 27tc, dc [28]. Weave in/seal off the tails.
2) Shorter body ribbon: Ch 29 (starting from 4th ch from hook) 25tc, dc [26]. Weave in/seal off the tails.
3) Sew/glue the shorter ribbon first. Place it on one side of the lid, to the bottom, then to the other side.
4) Sew/glue the longer ribbon above the shorter ribbon. Place it on the opposite side of the shorter ribbon. Since we crochet using different sizes of yarn and hook, you can freely make the ribbons longer/shorter, adapting to the size of your present’s lid.

Top ribbon
(red)

R1: (loosely) ch 38 [38]
Slst to the first chain to connect them into a loop, then start in the same st. (see picture)
R2-R4: ch 1 and dc around (3 rounds) [38]
Slst, fasten off and weave in/seal off the tails.

Now we’re going to make the ribbon tie and assembly the top ribbon:
1) Ribbon tie: Ch 15, (starting from 4th ch from hook) 12tc [12]
Weave in/seal off the tails.
2) Pinch the centre of the top ribbon then apply a little glue just to keep it stay pinched.
3) Attach the ribbon tie on the centre of the top ribbon, wrapping around it.
4) Attach the whole top ribbon to the top of the present’s lid

Assembly
I recommend to use ball point pins for assembly. This way will help you to keep the pieces in place and make it easier to do the sewing.
I’m using a hot glue gun to attach some of the parts, but if you make this amigurumi for kids, I recommend to make it fully sewn.
4) Attach the whole top ribbon to the top of the present’s lid.

  1. Sew the snout on the centre of the face, place the top of the snout 1 round above the round that you insert safety eyes. Before fully close the gap, insert little stuffing.
  2. Attach the nose in the middle and upper part of the snout.
  3. Attach the cheeks on both sides of the lower part of the face.
  4. Attach the eyebrows approx. 2 round above the eyes, slightly to the centre and forming like angry eyebrows a little.
  1. Sew the ears on approx. R5-R11 of the head.
  2. Sew/glue the ear details on the ears.
  3. (Optional) I tied a knot from the centre of the inner present’s body to the bottom so the bottom will be flat.
  1. Attach the head to the inner present’s body.
  2. Attach the arms below the cheeks and to the edge of the present’s body like so:
  1. Attach the polkadots on the body like so. Place 2 polkadots on each side of the body, one on the upper side and one on the lower side (see pictures).
  2. Place the remaining 2 polkadots on the top of the lid like so. Then, place the half polkadots on the sides of the lids like so.
