Stuff the head firmly. As Santa’s beard is quite grand, I like to continue with the ‘jersey’
part of the body and then complete the beard afterwards. Leaving the body unstuffed
you can flatten the ‘jersey’ as needed to get into the last few rows of the beard. Some
may prefer to complete the beard first before continuing on the body.
Body – Part 1
Colour change to C (cut yarn A) and work in the front loops only for the first round. You
will continue colour changing between colour C and colour D to create the Christmas
jersey. *Don’t stuff the body yet until you have completed the beard!

Beard
The beard is worked in short rows in the unworked front loops of the head. To start hold
the head upside down and pull up a loop of colour B yarn in the first front loop of round
17 of the head (see image 1).
Row 1: (Ch 5, slst into the next stitch) repeat until you’ve reached the end of the row.
Ch 5 and now turn the head right side up and slst into the first front loop of round 18 of
the head (see image 3). We are now going to continue working in rows turning the head
upside down or right side up as you reach the end of each row.
Row 2 – 8: (Ch 5, slst into the next stitch) repeat until you’ve reached the end of the row.
Ch 5, turn the head and slst into the first front loop of next round.
Cut yarn, fasten off and weave in ends.
Body – Part 2
Cut colour C & D and change to colour A.
Rd 14: BLO – 48 sc (48)

Rd 17: (6 sc, dec) x 6 (42)
Rd 18 – 19: 42 sc (42)
Rd 20: (5 sc, dec) x 6 (36)
Rd 21: 36 sc (36)
Start stuffing the body. We are now going to start
working the legs, so identify the middle and mark 4
central stitches for the back and front and 14 stitches
for each leg (see image 1 on next page).
I crocheted an additional 3 stitches in order to find the middle.
Moving
from the back to the front to start the first round of the legs (see image 3). Stuff the leg
firmly as you go.
Legs x 2
Rd 1 – 4: 14 sc (14)
Rd 5: (dec, sc 5) x 2 (12)
Rd 6 – 10: 12 sc (12)
Rd 11: dec x 6 (6)
Cut yarn and fasten off.
For the 2nd leg, leave a long starting tail for
sewing the body closed and attach yarn
in the 5th unworked stitch at the back of
the body (see image 4) with a sc (counts
as first stitch) and repeat the above leg
pattern.
Stuff the legs and body firmly. Close both
legs by weaving yarn under the front loops
of each remaining stitch and pulling tight
to close. Using the starting tail of the 2nd
leg, close his body by sewing the
remaining 4 unworked stitches together.
Weave in all ends
Arms x 2
Start in colour A and change colour for the
Christmas jersey as indicated below:

Don’t cut the yarn yet! Stuff ⅔ of the arm
and flatten, crochet 4 sc along the top
(through both loops) to close. Fasten off,
cut yarn and leave a long tail for sewing.
Sew the arms to the sides of the body
between rounds 2-3.
Nose
In colour A (or a salmon colour for a sun-kissed
look).
Rd 1: 5 sc in MR (5)
Rd 2: inc x 5 (10)
Rd 3: sc 10 (10)
Rd 4: (sc, dec) x 3, sc (7)
Cut yarn, fasten off and leave a long tail for
sewing. Stuff nose firmly and sew in the center of
the face over rounds 16-17
Finishing Touches:
Eyes – The blue pins map the eyes and is embroidered
over round 15, 2 stitches away from the nose and 2
stitches from point A to B and 2 stitches from point B to C
(see image 1).
Using black thread, I use DMC pearl cotton which is
thinner than normal embroidery thread. You can always
split the embroidery thread to 2-3 strands instead of using
all 6 to create a thinner line.
Insert your needle behind the eye and bring it out in the inner corner at point A. Insert
your needle into point C (see image 1) and bring it back out at point B (see image 2).
Insert the needle back into point B, making sure you catch the thread and bring it back
out at point C (see image 3).
Cheeks – With salmon yarn, embroider 2 lines under the
eye, 2 stitches long between rounds 16-17.
Eyebrows – In the same yarn colour as the beard,
embroider 2 lines about 3 stitches long over round 13 to
create eyebrows. Use pins to map the placement
before you start.
Santa’s Hat

Rd 35: (12 sc, inc) x 4 (56)
Rd 36 – 37: 56 sc (56)
Rd 38: (13 sc, inc) x 4 (60)
Colour change to B and cut yarn E.
Rd 39 – 40: 60 sc (60)
Rd 41: (9 sc, inc) x 6 (66)
Rd 42 – 46: 66 sc (66)
Slst to first sc in round 46 to close. Cut yarn, fasten off invisibly and weave in ends. Fold
the last 5 rows up to create the hat trim. Make a 2.5 cm pom-pom in white yarn (or you
could crochet a small ball) and attach to the tip of the hat.
The hat is oversized. I like to make 2-fold lines, so it hangs to one side. Pin the folds down
and leave it for a day, it should naturally hold the crease lines you made.
Pants
In colour E yarn. Ch 50 and join to the 1st chain with
a sc (counts as 1st stitch) to make a big circle
(make sure your chain isn’t twisted when
joining).
Rd 1 – 2: 50 sc (50)
Rd 3: (8 sc, dec) x 5 (45)
Rd 4 – 6: 45 sc (45)
Rd 7: (7 sc, dec) x 5 (40)
Rd 8 – 9: 40 sc (40)
Legs
We are now going to make the legs of the
pants, so mark 3 central stitches for both the
front and back and 17 stitches for each leg (as
you did with his legs). Moving from the back to the
front to start the first round of the legs.
Rd 10 – 14: 17 sc (17)
*Crochet an additional sc (or as much as needed) to make sure you are on the inner
seam line of the leg. Loosen your tension when you slst the next round.
Rd 15: 17 slst (17)
Cut yarn, fasten off invisibly and weave in ends.
Attach yarn in the 4th unworked stitch at the back (leave a long starting tail) and repeat
the leg pattern from round 10 for the 2nd leg. Sew the 3 central stitches closed with the
starting tail of the 2nd leg and weave in ends.
Waistband
Attach colour E yarn in the 1st starting chain stitch. Loosen your tension when making the
round of slst.
Rd 1: 50 sc (50)
Rd 2: 50 slst (50)
Cut yarn, fasten off invisibly and weave in ends.
Straps x 2
The straps may vary in length depending on your yarn and tension. So, to check the chain
length required for your Santa, put his pants on (see * note) and place pins in the front
(about 8-9 stitches apart) and back (about 6-7 stitches apart) where the straps will be
attached. Add or reduce chain stitches as needed and remember to add an additional
chain as you will start in the 2nd chain.
In colour E yarn, ch 39 starting in 2nd chain from hook, 38 slst. Cut yarn.
Attach straps to the back of the pants and weave in ends. Make a French knot to secure
to the front of the pants using a contrasting colour. Alternatively, you can embroider a
few simple lines to secure.
*The pants are a snug fit and you will have to wiggle them on him initially.
Jacket
In colour E yarn, chain 31. Starting in the 2nd chain from hook and working in rows:
Row 1: 30 sc, 1 ch and turn (30)
Row 2: 3 sc, 6 ch, skip the next 6 stitches, 12 sc, 6 ch, skip the next 6 stitches, 3 sc, 1 ch
and turn (30)
We will now be working in the chains for the next row, to create the armhole.
Row 3: 3 sc, inc, 5 sc, inc, 3 sc, inc, 2 sc, inc, 3 sc, inc, 5 sc, inc, 3 sc, 1 ch and turn (36)
Row 4: 36 sc, 1 ch and turn (36)
Row 5: 3 sc, inc, (5 sc, inc) x 2, 4 sc, inc, (5 sc, inc) x 2, 3 sc, 1 ch and turn (42)

Row 10 – 14: 54 sc, 1 ch and turn (54)
Skip the last 1 chain on row 14. Cut yarn and fasten off.
Jacket Border
In colour E yarn, insert your hook in the first stitch of row 1 (see
image 1), working your way around the jacket:
1 sc in each row, (1 sc, 1 ch, 1 sc) in the last stitch to create the
corner, 1 sc in each stitch along the bottom edge, (1 sc, 1 ch, 1 sc)
in the last stitch to create the corner, 1 sc in each row
Cut yarn, fasten off and weave in ends.
